The anonymous city is in chaos. The idea of modernization has not been attested yet. It was just the greatest agenda to push people to look at the same utopia that wouldn’t exist. In reality, every single person who initially urged to make the utopia ironically ends up with making their own way in different directions. In the anonymous city, people never believe in society. The only thing they trust and rely on is a close relationship that they can handle with.
In this project, our building integrates the chaotic aspects of Sydney underneath and showcases the new typology on how to live collectively in the sky liberated from junk-space below.
The new intervention extended from the core part of the existing building provides the peaceful courtyard on its footprint surrounded by decayed outer walls, producing the tension between past and present. At the same time, that tension is united by the tilted columns stabbing into The Goods Line, which captures the messiness of modernization.
The structure of the building carries the diverted service pipes all the way up to every slab where 2 to 8 residences live collectively and have a small community. In each floor, the technical devices (kitchen, bath, heater and so on) parasitize these service pipes. The activities that happen in each slab are negotiated by the place of the structure, including the tilted columns which are unique to the each slab and the services which have a consistency between levels. This organization allows the residences to have a freedom and credibility within each floor.
The accumulations of small and tangible utopia within the community cast a doubt upon the idea of bigger and intangible utopian society by revealing students life to the skyline.
