Our studio will use the relationship between the book and the building to re-imagine the city’s past for its future, by transforming the material conditions of its present. We will investigate the often-overlooked relationship between books and buildings in our architectural culture, by examining the rule books that built Sydney – from ordnance surveys to standing orders, to pattern books for prefabricated building components, to treatises, building catalogues and manuals – in their particular relation to our chosen Sydney site: Central Station. At this place we will investigate the spatial qualities of books and the narrative qualities of buildings to understand where they intersect. We will then detect, document and propose, through drawing, moments of architectural mutation: moments of daring marked by a departure from, or resistance to, the printed authorities distributed by a ruling empire. These interventions will propose a new relationship between Central station, the surrounding city, and Australia’s rural inland.
