Spatial Agency is a design studio that explores the potential of architecture to make positive contributions to the conditions and wellbeing of people, cultural practices and environments. Focusing on socio-architectural spatial dynamics within complex political environments, Spatial Agency offers six ‘live’ studios to introduce a variety of sites, programs, and contexts. 2020 studios include the adaptive reuse of Foundation Hall as an Aboriginal community centre in Walgett, new modes of transitional housing from prison to community, Aboriginal housing in Boggabilla, woman’s refuge accommodation for women and children leaving violence and the design of Community health and day-care facilities at the Sydney Children’s Hospital. Common to all studios is a commitment to social justice with which students are asked to situate a design scheme which provides tangible benefits for a predetermined group of targeted stakeholders.
