North Edge Autonomous District – Elesi Atsu and Annabelle Dawn-Jones

North Edge Autonomous District, a refuge for the academically mistreated and institutionally neglected. Restores the agency to the expert, the apprentice; the essence of a workshop. A facility for the autonomous execution of an eclectic range of disciplines; the common guiding principles for the district being an obligation to disseminate knowledge, and work interdisciplinarily.

Universities have become instrumentalised as part of a nationalistic and commercial machine of capital production- so much so that it is difficult to separate the current notions of education from the purposes of employability and profitability. We believe crises about the misallocation of resources, student and staff wellbeing and degradation of the quality of learning are all symptoms of the corporatisation of universities, and so to rid of these symptoms, the fundamental power structures and goals of the universities must radically change- education should emerge out of faculty and expertise.

N.E.A.D is not a sanctuary from the urban fabric, but a microcosm of it. Network and structure are formed in real-time, as faculty and expertise directly determine the future sprawl and ambition of their respective niches. Participants in this facility engage directly with and emerge from the context. With a vision of education and ‘doing’ as a type of indefinite residency, N.E.A.D is committed to providing the facility and space for the unfolding of this manifestation of network and self-determination.
