The history of architecture is implicated in material and its authorship. In contrast to diagrammatic and drawing-led modes of architectural production, this studio pursued architecture as the outcome of a designed material event or action. Drawing upon an initial phase of speculative material research, students designed and developed an experimental material system through a researched material matrix, processing technique and attendant modelling practice. In the second half of the semester, the studio focused on the design of a small but complex public gallery, The “Sydney Sculptors Gallery” from the unique materials sets researched earlier, integrating material logic, context and environmental concerns.
From systems of surplus to scarcity from highly controlled to wild, through design-based inquiry, this studio contested assumptions of ‘building materials’ and ‘construction techniques’, seeking to significantly expand the conceptual range, environmental awareness and vocabulary of architecture.
