Designing for a burnt-out society, Take Two

Over the past six years I have developed a series of nested theoretical positions in studio at UTS, the result of which is three books - Instruments, Third Spaces and Territories – that together form something of a manifesto for architecture in the age of neoliberalism. However, the “problem” of neoliberalism and these attempts to redirect the impacts of capital through alternate spatial propositions appears quaint in the current context where we are subject to a constant assault of distressing content and contexts.

Fifteen years ago, Byung-Chul Han pre-empted what we now call a lack of “social cohesion” in his book, The Burnt-Out Society. We ask if architecture has any role in this and can offer any respite. To assist us, we triangulate the IPCC’s intensified focus on sufficiency, Helmut Rosa’s concept of resonance, and Jem Blendell’s preparation for collapse, staking out a terrain for a burnt-out society to recover. The place we will test our hypotheses will be Copenhagen, arguably the happiest society in the world and specifically, at Refshaleoen, a former industrial area at the edge of the city that is the hottest redevelopment project happening in the city at present.

Burial / Quarantine Studio

A burial ground, overgrown, bowered with flannel flowers, looks back across the water to the city.

This studio asks how architecture can tell a story: how we can navigate entangled narratives of site, their commonalities, their frictions; stories sacred, mundane, and profane; to reckon with the haunting.

We start with Eve Tuck and C. Ree’s Glossary of Haunting, a text ‘about righting (and sometimes wronging) wrongs; about hauntings [...] and what they might mean for understanding settler colonialism, ceremony, revenge, and decolonization.’ We take this thinking to Car-rang-gel, to North Head’s Third Quarantine Cemetery. Students will use landscape thinking to read the critically endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, an ancient ecology growing from
century-old graves and their associated stories of material sourcing, migration, imported design culture, languages, lineages and plants.

We will be thinking about the intimacy of burial on unknown soil. We will tactically dismantle ‘heritage’ structures and in turn look to ruderal ecologies to learn how to live among the ruins. This studio asks whether belonging can be found through looking-after, and what our reciprocal obligation to the Country that cares for us is.

We will spend time with questions of sickness, grief, death practices, and burial, and invite a depth of engagement from students who join us.

Georges River, The Rivers Project Part IV: Civic Space and Radical Inclusion on Salt Pan Creek

This studio is the fourth in a series that take rivers in Sydney as the subject for research and design investigation. The study of a river brings together a number of issues, historical and contemporary: flooding and climate change, Aboriginal sovereignty and dispossession, social space, planning, water supply and industry to name a few. The cyclical flooding and drought on Australia’s east coast has provided a strong impetus to address development around river systems but this studio takes a broader view both chronologically and regionally, considering how rivers can be further integrated into processes of urbanisation that address issues of resilience through multi-scalar analyses of landscape and building. This studio seeks to engage this complexity by focusing on Salt Pan Creek, a tributary of the Georges River. Students will develop projects as a synthesis of architectural and landscape strategies that address the need for spaces of gathering and civic participation in Sydney’s south-west.

Beloved Sydney, the city that buries its past (Maya Stocks at the Tinsheds Gallery, 2022), that constantly cannibalises itself dreaming of ownership and accrued property value. A city whose arts institutions are captive to funding cycles and ticket sales, and whose development is increasingly monopolised by those with capital. A city with cultures, criticality and imagination like a rhizome spreading in every direction, just under the pavement, a dandelion seeking a crack to emerge from.

FOR LEASE, PLEASE CALL ME is a studio dedicated to making space for arts and culture. In Sydney, an extensive network of Artist-Run Initiatives (ARIs)—small, DIY and independently-run spaces and organisations—supports a healthy and diverse arts ecology, though are plagued by a lack of funding opportunities, burnout and the inherent fleetingness of their efforts. Much like mori, students will propose renovations for a ‘cute’ cultural institution in Chinatown, Sydney, with an imaginary lease and a very modest budget. This studio requires a love of arts and culture in all forms, an attention to detail, a fondness for eccentric spaces and a willingness to get your hands dirty.
