It was wonderful hosting Dr. Apostolos Kyriazis @akyriaz_p, and his students from Abu Dhabi University at UTS last week!

Dr. Apostolos Kyriazis, Associate Professor of Architecture at Abu Dhabi University, recently visited the UTS School of Architecture with a group of his students as part of a collaborative teaching initiative with Dr. Mohammed Makki and his Master of Architecture students at UTS.

As part of their design studio, UTS students are exploring the conditions of urban quality in several Abu Dhabi suburbs and developing alternative design scenarios that respond to the region’s climatic, cultural, and geographic contexts. During their visit, Dr. Kyriazis and his students shared valuable insights into Abu Dhabi’s urban landscape, providing UTS students with a wealth of knowledge to inform their work.

A few weeks on, we’re still reflecting on the powerful lecture delivered by renowned architect Lina Ghotmeh @linaghotmeh as part of the UTS School of Architecture’s Solidarity public program, supported by @institute_architects_aus.

It was a privilege to welcome Lina to the UTS Great Hall, where she shared her compelling design philosophy, Archaeology of the Future. Her reflections on projects such as the Stone Garden in Beirut, the Serpentine Pavilion in London, and the Hermès Manufacture in Normandy offered deep insight into how architecture can act as both witness and catalyst.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us in person, and to Dr Janice Rieger @dr.janice_rieger and Professor Gerard Reinmuth @gerardreinmuth for leading an engaging conversation following the talk.

Thank you to everyone who came to the opening of the Good Space / Bad Space pavilion yesterday!

This pavilion is a city, reduced to colour. Four public places in Sydney were selected and structures were built from each site’s unique palette. Every piece represents a dominant colour from that place. Together they form a colour-only reconstruction of an unseen street. No names, no clues—only colour. What do you feel? Does this read as a good space or a bad one? Scan the QR code inside each pavilion and tell us.

Good Space / Bad Space builds on the Quantifying Quality research project, a government-funded project which measured people’s perception of Sydney’s public spaces. The project was led by researchers at the UTS School of Architecture (Dr. Mohammed Makki, Dr. Linda Matthews, and Dr. Rafael Luna) with industry partners at Architectural practice SJB @aboutsjb. Quantifying Quality won the 2024 Australian Urban Design Award.

What is the role of contemporary photography in building space? Just where do the dialogues, tensions, and reciprocities between photography and architecture lie? Focusing on the practice of Australian photographer Rory Gardiner and Belgian photographer Maxime Delvaux – two central figures in a new generation of architectural photographers – Analogue Images explores the output of these leading practitioners and poses key questions around the underpinnings and parameters of the broader milieu in which they work.
