This studio seeks to inspire a new wave of design thinking that spans two evolving and equally urgent social and spatial conditions: Super Ageing and the Housing Crisis.
The studio critically analyses both conditions to extract causal linkages and identify projected implications of prevalent neo-liberal business-as-usual models in Seoul, Korea, and Sydney, Australia, on equitable socio-spatial urban development. As a design task, students are tasked with creating novel intergenerational housing models that question current inequitable developmental models and ageist tendencies to seamlessly integrate the needs of an ageing society with sustainable architectural practices in the Korean and Australian context. Their design should negotiate the boundaries between generational socio-cultural diversity, private and communal spaces, indoor and outdoor environments, and traditional and innovative construction methods to produce co-dependent, symbiotic models of habitation. This brief is designed to foster innovation, encouraging students to think critically about the role of architecture in shaping a future that is inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of all generations equitably.
