As part of this year’s Visualisation Institute Symposium, the School of Architecture features prominently across two panels, convened by A/Prof Linda Matthews.

1. Counter-Mapping in Architectural Pedagogy
With Dr Endriana Audisho @endriana , Dr Louisa King @louisa_king_ Matte Ager-McConnell @matte.mcconnell & Yousef Ghazal @sef__g , and Tom Woodhead

This roundtable explores counter-mapping as a critical practice for unsettling dominant visual systems, foregrounding lived experience, collective memory and contested geographies. Student counter-mapping projects from UTS will be exhibited in the space.

2. Quantifying Quality – The Image and Its Impact on Perception
Moderated by Dr Mohammed Makki (UTS) @m_a_k_k_i and Jordan Mathers (SJB) @jordanmathers.jm with panellists including A/Prof Linda Matthews, Jonathan Knapp (SJB), Tamara Donnellan (ASPECT Studios), Estelle Grech (Committee for Sydney) and Ryan Cole (Burwood City Council). @aboutsjb @aspectstudios @committeeforsydney

This panel examines how perception, representation and lived experience shape our understanding of urban quality, beyond metrics and regulation.

Join us for an immersive, interactive gathering in the PACT Theatre that explores marginalised feminist critiques through the staging of critical spatial acts of political resistance. This event will bring together a dynamic mix of thinkers, creators, and changemakers to interrogate how space - physical, social, and symbolic - is shaped by, and responds to, systems of power, identity, and resistance.

Through a series of performances, installations, conversations and interactive art-making, we will collectively examine the potential of space-making practices that disrupt, reimagine, and reclaim. Whether you are a researcher, artist, activist, performer or interested community member, this event invites you to participate in a living dialogue on how we resist, build, and occupy space, together.

Expect thought-provoking work at the intersection of art, activism, and academia. Expect to be challenged. Expect to create. Expect to connect.

It was wonderful hosting Dr. Apostolos Kyriazis @akyriaz_p, and his students from Abu Dhabi University at UTS last week!

Dr. Apostolos Kyriazis, Associate Professor of Architecture at Abu Dhabi University, recently visited the UTS School of Architecture with a group of his students as part of a collaborative teaching initiative with Dr. Mohammed Makki and his Master of Architecture students at UTS.

As part of their design studio, UTS students are exploring the conditions of urban quality in several Abu Dhabi suburbs and developing alternative design scenarios that respond to the region’s climatic, cultural, and geographic contexts. During their visit, Dr. Kyriazis and his students shared valuable insights into Abu Dhabi’s urban landscape, providing UTS students with a wealth of knowledge to inform their work.

A few weeks on, we’re still reflecting on the powerful lecture delivered by renowned architect Lina Ghotmeh @linaghotmeh as part of the UTS School of Architecture’s Solidarity public program, supported by @institute_architects_aus.

It was a privilege to welcome Lina to the UTS Great Hall, where she shared her compelling design philosophy, Archaeology of the Future. Her reflections on projects such as the Stone Garden in Beirut, the Serpentine Pavilion in London, and the Hermès Manufacture in Normandy offered deep insight into how architecture can act as both witness and catalyst.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us in person, and to Dr Janice Rieger @dr.janice_rieger and Professor Gerard Reinmuth @gerardreinmuth for leading an engaging conversation following the talk.

Interior Architecture – Foundations in Interior Architecture – Design Studio 1

Foundations in Interior Architecture, Interior Architecture Design Studio 1 introduces students to the foundational principles, theories, and methods of interior architecture. By exploring ideas of performative spaces and urban interiors, students develop a detailed understanding of interior and spatial design methods and making practices by creatively engaging with Sydney’s metropolitan, social, and cultural environments. This includes developing wearable designs to intervene in urban environments through explorations of materials, model-making, ergonomics, and human factors, as well as cultivating site-responsive spatial installations that challenge people’s perceptions and ways of occupying existing public interiors of the city.
