Good outcomes in complex projects require agility and tenacity to navigate a plethora of competing forces – project brief, context, town planning, building standards, stakeholders and budget; plus firmness, commodities and delight. A sound process maps a path through complexity, guided by the designer’s internal compass of what to prioritise and what to let go, steered by personal values. Complex projects offer an opportunity to grapple with the issues of our time, inviting society to do better, to be better. GET REAL explores a twist on mixed use, mixing schools with social housing. The site is in Woolloomooloo, with the brief, client body, type of school, and approach to mixed-use determined by the student. GET REAL is process-driven, tried and tested on many projects, engaging the student to work within their own value system, using iterative design, to embrace complexity without complication.
