Abstract:
Complex projects require diplomacy, deftness, and diligence to navigate competing forces –briefs, context, planning regulations, building codes, stakeholder aspirations, and budgets. This complexity demands self-awareness, authentically responding to the issues of our time – to decolonise, to decarbonise, and to shape equity.
GET REAL offers a robust design process in response to this complexity – aspiring for firmness, commodity and delight – guided by the designer’s internal compass of knowing what to prioritise and what to let go, steered by personal values and critical research.

GET REAL explores a twist on mixed use: integrating schools with housing. The site will be in Marrickville with the final location, project brief, client body, school type, and housing tenure defined by the student.

This is a process-driven studio, grounded in real-world methodologies, engaging the student to work within their own value system, using iterative design, project reporting, and presentation to embrace complexity with clarity and purpose.

RE-FORM: Adaptive Reuse for Sustainable Urban Futures

Abstract:
The Re-Form studio focuses on adaptive reuse as a regenerative strategy, encouraging students to move beyond growth-driven paradigms, towards circular, resource-conscious design. Students will explore how existing buildings, components, and materials can be reworked and adapted to support a post-carbon, socio-ecologically attuned future. The studio undertakes this exploratory journey in accordance with the UTS Campus 2024 Strategic Master Plan. It involves the UTS Building 5 as an adaptive reuse project: a live project slated to become the new home of the Faculty of Design and Society (DAB + FASS + Animal Logic). The studio aligns with the school’s decarbonization and urban equity strategies by strategically deploying tools of community engagement, preservation, innovation, and waste reduction, while respecting the building’s original context, heritage, and cultural value. The students will focus on shaping our Faculty’s new home while interacting with real clients (employees and students of the Faculty) and campus planning professionals to shape the future of work and education at UTS.

Joy + Justice

Abstract: A building is a gift. Let’s define its agency in the gifting network or custodianship & communal care as an alternative to preservation.

Joy & Justice is an ethics driven exploration into how we can corroborate Charlotte Malterre-Barthes’ 2021 challenge for a Moratorium on New Construction. In the midst of climate catastrophe we must become expert storytellers and advocates for existing buildings. Especially in Sydney, where high construction costs mean the nuances of deconstruction are impatiently cast aside and the vitality and durability of existing buildings is not studied.

Therefore this studio examines a series of Sydney buildings earmarked for demolition. Inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s writing on the gift economy, students are invited to consider each building as a gift - a wonderful contribution to Country and a ‘thing’ we have mutual responsibility for. Beginning with an ethics framework, students will formulate a repertoire, culminating in a campaign to halt a building’s demolition. This repertoire is a way to harvest and reveal the strength, joy and justice for existing buildings and converge campaigns across the studio.

Public Luxury: Reclaiming Language; Recultivating Woolloomooloo

Absract:
“A Garden and a Library,” Roman orator Cicero mused was “all you need.” Fast forward 2000 years to Hakim Bey: “the only possible avant garde is the avant garden.” Bey’s Temporary Autonomous Zone frames an intention: sanctuary spaces within the contemporary city, an archipelago of creative commonality resisting an ocean of conformity and control.

The garden, conceptually, is the here and now: sensual, experiential delights. The library - elsewhere (and when), imagination and narration linking to things that do not exist, yet. Both places of wonder, full of oddities and outtakes.

Celebrating the space between fantasy and reality builds that critical tool the new world will demand in negotiating the coming transformations: cultural resilience. Speculative futuring escapes today’s limitations, re-imagining what cities can become.

Three Acts, embracing paradoxes:
Deep time – urban futures: regenerative Woolloomooloo.
Colonising fabric - civic instruments: rebuilding the Commons.
Present confines - impossible artefacts: reimagining the Future.

Flow, State, Site

Leads: Qianyi Lim + Eleanor Peres, Sibling Architecture @sibling_architecture

Abstract:
On Wiradjuri Country, our site is a grassland sloping toward Chifley Dam on Kalari (the Lachlan) River. A significant pause in a critical body of water, this is the drinking water catchment for nearby Bathurst which is Australia’s oldest inland colonial settlement. Here, working in pairs, students will design architecture that supports artists in their development of new performances. Spaces will be calibrated to flows of the body in a choreography as much as the water running through the building, the site and Kalari as an ancient passage of water. This will require careful coordination of systems at small and large scales. Borrowing the essence of rehearsal from performing arts, we will embrace the practice of work-in-progress and commence iterative design right away with witnessing and documenting a live performance. From iconic references, students will draw expertise on stage design, audience interaction, the theatre of a site itself and moments for reflection. Gumboots recommended.

Architecture – Knowledge Formations – Design Studio 3

Dave Pigram

The brief of Knowledge Formations, Architecture Design Studio 3, is a public library: a building larger and more complex than the houses, pavilions and landscape interventions the students undertake in earlier design studios. The design process builds a strategic framework around five steps, bridging between the brief and the final design: 1. concept; 2. (re)categorisation; 3. organisation; 4. site response; and 5. tectonic form. After completing this sequence once, the students complete additional iterations, emphasising feedback and synergies between the five stages.
