Our Capstone students have designed a “Post-labour University” to trigger responses on the spatial and systemic implications of removing work and/or the skills associated with it as the protagonists of the project of knowledge. This experiment is sited in Barangaroo Central, one of the most symbolic and contested urban scenarios of the city. An external jury will select the winner of the best Capstone project award 2020 sponsored by Billard Leece Partnership The result of the competition will be announced on Monday the 9th at 1 pm. @billardleece.

Please, join us for the final jury of DOMESTICITY POST-WORK, an anti-think-tank structured around five pedagogical units that engage with a project of radical imagination at the convergence of (and in alliance with) decolonial, post-anthropocentric, feminist and queering epistemologies. DOMESTICITY POST-WORK is a provocation to trigger responses on the spatial and systemic implications of removing work from the epicentre of life. The domestic realm –previously understood as a space of restoration, and now forced to connect to a global network of remote hyper-productivity– is the space of experimentation in which to rehearse the new rituals, habits, and modes of engagement with the world; the political arena for a post-work society.

Negotiation and cooperation are not only concepts theoretically interrogated by the brief, but also a methodological tour-de-force implicit in the production of a single collective outcome per pedagogical unit.

Today we will review the design projects of second year architecture! All welcome to join (majority of tutorials starting at 2pm)- Zoom links (with times) + Tutorial websites accessed via our link. Good luck second years!

Studio 04’s final review will schizophrenically move between student design projects and the collective studio deliverables of a virtual showroom, artifact and publication (all exhibited through a tutorial website). The brief asked students to design student housing on the TAFE Marcus Clark site. Each studio leader has defined a research question or thematic as a lens to design through. Design projects will be displayed within each tutorial and each tutorial will be ‘on show’ through a fair format. A fair is traditionally defined as a public event where goods from a particular industry are advertised and sold. Studio 04 is hacking this format, which usually caters for a capitalist logic, to showcase and disseminate ideas as opposed to the sale of goods. The fair will display alternative forms of living that challenge past and current student housing developments. 10 distinct showrooms (via websites) come together to formulate a ‘Housing Students’ domestic fair to explore the question; what does it mean to house a student today?

Architecture as Rendered Society
Architecture is never constrained to the scale at which we might first perceive it. It is in buildings’ imbrication with other entities (environments, infrastructures, financial plans, policies, biological designs, advocacies, and activism), in their transition across scales (climatic, material, technological, spatial, and temporal), and in their articulation of larger reality-making apparatuses (plans, discourses, ideas, calculations, regulations, genetics) that their political participation can be tracked and intervened in as they play their role in enacting our shared realities. Architecture’s agency is embedded in its capacity to exceed scale-containment.

Biography
Andrés Jaque is an architect, writer, and curator. He is the founder of the Office for Political Innovation, a New York/Madrid-based agency working at the intersection of research, critical environmental practices, and design. In 2016 he received the 10th Frederick Kiesler Prize celebrating trajectories in the intersection of art and architecture. He was also awarded Silver Lion for Best Research Project at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, as well as the Dionisio Hernández-Gil Prize. In 2018 he co-curated Manifesta 12 in Palermo, titled The Planetary Garden. Cultivating Coexistence, which inquired into the ecological, technological, and political role Palermo has played, He is the Chief Curator of the upcoming 13th Shanghai Biennale, titled Bodies of Water.

Paradise is a new online journal for Australian architecture and research run by students of the UTS School of Architecture. Paradise is about Australia, the lucky country at the end of the world. It is a space for the unexpected and the emerging, the established academic and the bright-eyed underdog. It is both completely serious and totally naive. Paradise welcomes the discomfort of the agonistic multitude, the itchy immaterial condition of adjacency.

Paradise is seeking contributions for the inaugural theme of the Backyard.

"Through the fence palings what do you see? A well tended garden. A wild lawn. A glistening pool of water edged in blue tiles. Beyond our fence, a private party makes their way through a case of XXXX Gold. On the other side, the neighbour’s unwashed car sits atop a slab of sunbaked concrete. The faint sound of a sitar floats through on the wind from a few doors down. Through the back fence, only dust as far as the eye can see.

Good fences make good neighbours. You can tell a lot about a person by what their fence encloses, the privacy it protects. The beauty of a fence lies in its unassailable authority. Do what you want, just not in my Backyard. We claimed this patch of dirt with imaginary lines drawn with imported ink. We possessed this piece of Country by staking it out in timber posts.

The flames stopped right at our back fence. We are so lucky. This is our little piece of Paradise.

Other Things Visible on Paper
This lecture examines the ways in which the pedagogical milieu of the 1960s in the U.S., structured value in architecture by establishing distinctions between copyists and technicians on the one hand, and authors and conceptual designers on the other. Despite the apparent oppositions inferred by these pairings, these terms were bound up in a definition of technology that remained rooted in the mechanization of heavy industry. The focus obscured the growing number of unimposing yet specially designed items of everyday practice supplied to architects that were equally intrinsic to the rationalization of practice. These supplies—inks, pens, papers, films, erasers, lead cartridges, and tapes—were what I call “machines on the desk.” Despite the various ways in which manufacturers invested in ideas of diversification and innovation, precision, and systematization, these items were not widely understood as technological objects. It was precisely the fact that they did not appear to be technological, however, that enabled them, under the neutral guise of supplies, to operate as important yet invisible actors in the structuring of architectural authors in the studio—students who became authors exactly because of their ability to operate these 'machines'.

Biography
Sarah Hearne a curator and educator of architectural history and theory. Her curatorial work includes an exhibition and symposium on information management and display in contemporary architectural research, titled Fieldwork (2015) at the University of Technology Gallery in Sydney, where she was a History and Theory lecturer. She has also worked on curatorial projects including Everything Loose Will Land (MAK Center, 2013) and more recently as an Associate Curator on The Duck and the Document (Sci-Arc Gallery, 2017) and Architecture Itself and Other Myths of Postmodernism (Canadian Centre for Architecture, 2018).

Smout Allen will present their iconoclastic work, through “speculative architecture and architectural instruments that explore borders, tectonics, cartography and ecology to document and expose intersections between nature and the manmade”.

Biography
Mark Smout and Laura Allen jointly run the design research practice, Smout Allen, where they explore the intersections and interactions of landscape, architecture, art, and science.
They have been selected for both Venice Biennale (2012 and 2016) and Chicago Biennale (2015). In 2005, they won the Summer Exhibition Award for Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts. They have successfully carried out collaborations with international individuals and institutions such as the University of Southern California Libraries, Williams F1 Advanced Engineering, the Centre for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), Los Angeles, the British Council and the Land Art Archive, Nevada. Since 2010 they have regularly worked in collaboration with Geoff Manaugh, developing projects including L.A.T.B.D. for the Chicago Biennial and University of Southern California, and the “British Exploratory Land Archive”.
They are both Professors at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where they run MArch Unit 11 and are Co-Directors of the Landscape Architecture Programmes.

Hunter gatherer. How FIG Projects wander the land of architecture online.
FIG Projects, founded by Fabrizio Gallanti and Francisca Insulza in 2003, is a research studio, based in Montréal, that writes, studies, curates and designs. Since 2014, it scavenges the deep recesses of archives, popular culture depositories, personal blogs, memories, whether analog or digital, to then regurgitate predigested content to an expanding audience of "friends on Facebook". Architecture is the main field of interest, but curiosity brings us to many other places. The only rule of play, is to find the stuff we like and suggest others to try it too.

Fabrizio Gallanti is a curator and architect with experience in architectural design, education, publication and exhibitions. In the fall of 2020 he will start as director of arc en rêve in Bordeaux. He holds a PhD in architectural design from the Politecnico di Torino (2001) and has taught in Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. He was the first Senior Mellon Fellow at the Princeton University School of Architecture in 2014, and currently teaches at the School of Architecture of McGill University and Université de Montréal, and the Architectural Association, London. From 2011 to 2014, he was the associate director of programs at the CCA, Montréal. Gallanti served as the architecture editor at Abitare Magazine and as editor-in-chief of the Abitare website (2007-2011). Together with Francisca Insulza, Gallanti is the founding partner of the architectural research studio FIG Projects (2003-present), which curated the exhibition The World in Our Eyes (2016) for the 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale.

From isolation of polluted landscapes to safety protocols to survive in the wild, Quarantine strategies are not only linked to pandemics and diseases. Methods of containment are directly related to architecture both in form and policy and surround us more often than we might imagine. This lecture navigates through a spectrum of experiments and investigations, stories and policies, which aim to highlight how architecture is often more linked to constrain, than freedom, to conditioning, than empowerment.  From virus protection to interplanetary contamination, join me for a short quarantine, and adventures of the contained.

David A. Garcia is an architect, educator and researcher. He is a graduate from The Bartlett School of Architecture and has worked at Foster and Partners and at Henning Larsen Architects until 2011. David has taught architecture internationally since 2003, and is today Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Art Academy School of Architecture (KADK) and director of the Master program “Architecture and Extreme Environments” since 2014. He is founder of the practice MAP Architects, which focuses on merging arts and sciences in innovating for design in extreme environments with active building projects in the Arctic. The practice publishes the annual pamphlet “MAP”.  David lectures and travels world-wide, testing thoughts in academic landscapes and experimental structures in extreme territories.

Please, join us for the final jury of DOMESTICITY POST-WORK, an anti-think-tank structured around five pedagogical units that engage with a project of radical imagination at the convergence of (and in alliance with) decolonial, post-anthropocentric, feminist and queering epistemologies. DOMESTICITY POST-WORK is a provocation to trigger responses on the spatial and systemic implications of removing work from the epicentre of life. The domestic realm –previously understood as a space of restoration, and now forced to connect to a global network of remote hyper-productivity– is the space of experimentation in which to rehearse the new rituals, habits, and modes of engagement with the world; the political arena for a post-work society.

Negotiation and cooperation are not only concepts theoretically interrogated by the brief, but also a methodological tour-de-force implicit in the production of a single collective outcome per pedagogical unit.

Today we will review the design projects of second year architecture! All welcome to join (majority of tutorials starting at 2pm)- Zoom links (with times) + Tutorial websites accessed via our link. Good luck second years!

Studio 04’s final review will schizophrenically move between student design projects and the collective studio deliverables of a virtual showroom, artifact and publication (all exhibited through a tutorial website). The brief asked students to design student housing on the TAFE Marcus Clark site. Each studio leader has defined a research question or thematic as a lens to design through. Design projects will be displayed within each tutorial and each tutorial will be ‘on show’ through a fair format. A fair is traditionally defined as a public event where goods from a particular industry are advertised and sold. Studio 04 is hacking this format, which usually caters for a capitalist logic, to showcase and disseminate ideas as opposed to the sale of goods. The fair will display alternative forms of living that challenge past and current student housing developments. 10 distinct showrooms (via websites) come together to formulate a ‘Housing Students’ domestic fair to explore the question; what does it mean to house a student today?

Architecture as Rendered Society
Architecture is never constrained to the scale at which we might first perceive it. It is in buildings’ imbrication with other entities (environments, infrastructures, financial plans, policies, biological designs, advocacies, and activism), in their transition across scales (climatic, material, technological, spatial, and temporal), and in their articulation of larger reality-making apparatuses (plans, discourses, ideas, calculations, regulations, genetics) that their political participation can be tracked and intervened in as they play their role in enacting our shared realities. Architecture’s agency is embedded in its capacity to exceed scale-containment.

Biography
Andrés Jaque is an architect, writer, and curator. He is the founder of the Office for Political Innovation, a New York/Madrid-based agency working at the intersection of research, critical environmental practices, and design. In 2016 he received the 10th Frederick Kiesler Prize celebrating trajectories in the intersection of art and architecture. He was also awarded Silver Lion for Best Research Project at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, as well as the Dionisio Hernández-Gil Prize. In 2018 he co-curated Manifesta 12 in Palermo, titled The Planetary Garden. Cultivating Coexistence, which inquired into the ecological, technological, and political role Palermo has played, He is the Chief Curator of the upcoming 13th Shanghai Biennale, titled Bodies of Water.

Paradise is a new online journal for Australian architecture and research run by students of the UTS School of Architecture. Paradise is about Australia, the lucky country at the end of the world. It is a space for the unexpected and the emerging, the established academic and the bright-eyed underdog. It is both completely serious and totally naive. Paradise welcomes the discomfort of the agonistic multitude, the itchy immaterial condition of adjacency.

Paradise is seeking contributions for the inaugural theme of the Backyard.

"Through the fence palings what do you see? A well tended garden. A wild lawn. A glistening pool of water edged in blue tiles. Beyond our fence, a private party makes their way through a case of XXXX Gold. On the other side, the neighbour’s unwashed car sits atop a slab of sunbaked concrete. The faint sound of a sitar floats through on the wind from a few doors down. Through the back fence, only dust as far as the eye can see.

Good fences make good neighbours. You can tell a lot about a person by what their fence encloses, the privacy it protects. The beauty of a fence lies in its unassailable authority. Do what you want, just not in my Backyard. We claimed this patch of dirt with imaginary lines drawn with imported ink. We possessed this piece of Country by staking it out in timber posts.

The flames stopped right at our back fence. We are so lucky. This is our little piece of Paradise.

Other Things Visible on Paper
This lecture examines the ways in which the pedagogical milieu of the 1960s in the U.S., structured value in architecture by establishing distinctions between copyists and technicians on the one hand, and authors and conceptual designers on the other. Despite the apparent oppositions inferred by these pairings, these terms were bound up in a definition of technology that remained rooted in the mechanization of heavy industry. The focus obscured the growing number of unimposing yet specially designed items of everyday practice supplied to architects that were equally intrinsic to the rationalization of practice. These supplies—inks, pens, papers, films, erasers, lead cartridges, and tapes—were what I call “machines on the desk.” Despite the various ways in which manufacturers invested in ideas of diversification and innovation, precision, and systematization, these items were not widely understood as technological objects. It was precisely the fact that they did not appear to be technological, however, that enabled them, under the neutral guise of supplies, to operate as important yet invisible actors in the structuring of architectural authors in the studio—students who became authors exactly because of their ability to operate these 'machines'.

Biography
Sarah Hearne a curator and educator of architectural history and theory. Her curatorial work includes an exhibition and symposium on information management and display in contemporary architectural research, titled Fieldwork (2015) at the University of Technology Gallery in Sydney, where she was a History and Theory lecturer. She has also worked on curatorial projects including Everything Loose Will Land (MAK Center, 2013) and more recently as an Associate Curator on The Duck and the Document (Sci-Arc Gallery, 2017) and Architecture Itself and Other Myths of Postmodernism (Canadian Centre for Architecture, 2018).

Smout Allen will present their iconoclastic work, through “speculative architecture and architectural instruments that explore borders, tectonics, cartography and ecology to document and expose intersections between nature and the manmade”.

Biography
Mark Smout and Laura Allen jointly run the design research practice, Smout Allen, where they explore the intersections and interactions of landscape, architecture, art, and science.
They have been selected for both Venice Biennale (2012 and 2016) and Chicago Biennale (2015). In 2005, they won the Summer Exhibition Award for Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts. They have successfully carried out collaborations with international individuals and institutions such as the University of Southern California Libraries, Williams F1 Advanced Engineering, the Centre for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), Los Angeles, the British Council and the Land Art Archive, Nevada. Since 2010 they have regularly worked in collaboration with Geoff Manaugh, developing projects including L.A.T.B.D. for the Chicago Biennial and University of Southern California, and the “British Exploratory Land Archive”.
They are both Professors at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where they run MArch Unit 11 and are Co-Directors of the Landscape Architecture Programmes.

Hunter gatherer. How FIG Projects wander the land of architecture online.
FIG Projects, founded by Fabrizio Gallanti and Francisca Insulza in 2003, is a research studio, based in Montréal, that writes, studies, curates and designs. Since 2014, it scavenges the deep recesses of archives, popular culture depositories, personal blogs, memories, whether analog or digital, to then regurgitate predigested content to an expanding audience of "friends on Facebook". Architecture is the main field of interest, but curiosity brings us to many other places. The only rule of play, is to find the stuff we like and suggest others to try it too.

Fabrizio Gallanti is a curator and architect with experience in architectural design, education, publication and exhibitions. In the fall of 2020 he will start as director of arc en rêve in Bordeaux. He holds a PhD in architectural design from the Politecnico di Torino (2001) and has taught in Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. He was the first Senior Mellon Fellow at the Princeton University School of Architecture in 2014, and currently teaches at the School of Architecture of McGill University and Université de Montréal, and the Architectural Association, London. From 2011 to 2014, he was the associate director of programs at the CCA, Montréal. Gallanti served as the architecture editor at Abitare Magazine and as editor-in-chief of the Abitare website (2007-2011). Together with Francisca Insulza, Gallanti is the founding partner of the architectural research studio FIG Projects (2003-present), which curated the exhibition The World in Our Eyes (2016) for the 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale.

From isolation of polluted landscapes to safety protocols to survive in the wild, Quarantine strategies are not only linked to pandemics and diseases. Methods of containment are directly related to architecture both in form and policy and surround us more often than we might imagine. This lecture navigates through a spectrum of experiments and investigations, stories and policies, which aim to highlight how architecture is often more linked to constrain, than freedom, to conditioning, than empowerment.  From virus protection to interplanetary contamination, join me for a short quarantine, and adventures of the contained.

David A. Garcia is an architect, educator and researcher. He is a graduate from The Bartlett School of Architecture and has worked at Foster and Partners and at Henning Larsen Architects until 2011. David has taught architecture internationally since 2003, and is today Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Art Academy School of Architecture (KADK) and director of the Master program “Architecture and Extreme Environments” since 2014. He is founder of the practice MAP Architects, which focuses on merging arts and sciences in innovating for design in extreme environments with active building projects in the Arctic. The practice publishes the annual pamphlet “MAP”.  David lectures and travels world-wide, testing thoughts in academic landscapes and experimental structures in extreme territories.

Our Capstone students have designed a “Post-labour University” to trigger responses on the spatial and systemic implications of removing work and/or the skills associated with it as the protagonists of the project of knowledge. This experiment is sited in Barangaroo Central, one of the most symbolic and contested urban scenarios of the city. An external jury will select the winner of the best Capstone project award 2020 sponsored by Billard Leece Partnership The result of the competition will be announced on Monday the 9th at 1 pm. @billardleece.

Please, join us for the final jury of DOMESTICITY POST-WORK, an anti-think-tank structured around five pedagogical units that engage with a project of radical imagination at the convergence of (and in alliance with) decolonial, post-anthropocentric, feminist and queering epistemologies. DOMESTICITY POST-WORK is a provocation to trigger responses on the spatial and systemic implications of removing work from the epicentre of life. The domestic realm –previously understood as a space of restoration, and now forced to connect to a global network of remote hyper-productivity– is the space of experimentation in which to rehearse the new rituals, habits, and modes of engagement with the world; the political arena for a post-work society.

Negotiation and cooperation are not only concepts theoretically interrogated by the brief, but also a methodological tour-de-force implicit in the production of a single collective outcome per pedagogical unit.

Today we will review the design projects of second year architecture! All welcome to join (majority of tutorials starting at 2pm)- Zoom links (with times) + Tutorial websites accessed via our link. Good luck second years!

Studio 04’s final review will schizophrenically move between student design projects and the collective studio deliverables of a virtual showroom, artifact and publication (all exhibited through a tutorial website). The brief asked students to design student housing on the TAFE Marcus Clark site. Each studio leader has defined a research question or thematic as a lens to design through. Design projects will be displayed within each tutorial and each tutorial will be ‘on show’ through a fair format. A fair is traditionally defined as a public event where goods from a particular industry are advertised and sold. Studio 04 is hacking this format, which usually caters for a capitalist logic, to showcase and disseminate ideas as opposed to the sale of goods. The fair will display alternative forms of living that challenge past and current student housing developments. 10 distinct showrooms (via websites) come together to formulate a ‘Housing Students’ domestic fair to explore the question; what does it mean to house a student today?

Architecture as Rendered Society
Architecture is never constrained to the scale at which we might first perceive it. It is in buildings’ imbrication with other entities (environments, infrastructures, financial plans, policies, biological designs, advocacies, and activism), in their transition across scales (climatic, material, technological, spatial, and temporal), and in their articulation of larger reality-making apparatuses (plans, discourses, ideas, calculations, regulations, genetics) that their political participation can be tracked and intervened in as they play their role in enacting our shared realities. Architecture’s agency is embedded in its capacity to exceed scale-containment.

Biography
Andrés Jaque is an architect, writer, and curator. He is the founder of the Office for Political Innovation, a New York/Madrid-based agency working at the intersection of research, critical environmental practices, and design. In 2016 he received the 10th Frederick Kiesler Prize celebrating trajectories in the intersection of art and architecture. He was also awarded Silver Lion for Best Research Project at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, as well as the Dionisio Hernández-Gil Prize. In 2018 he co-curated Manifesta 12 in Palermo, titled The Planetary Garden. Cultivating Coexistence, which inquired into the ecological, technological, and political role Palermo has played, He is the Chief Curator of the upcoming 13th Shanghai Biennale, titled Bodies of Water.

Paradise is a new online journal for Australian architecture and research run by students of the UTS School of Architecture. Paradise is about Australia, the lucky country at the end of the world. It is a space for the unexpected and the emerging, the established academic and the bright-eyed underdog. It is both completely serious and totally naive. Paradise welcomes the discomfort of the agonistic multitude, the itchy immaterial condition of adjacency.

Paradise is seeking contributions for the inaugural theme of the Backyard.

"Through the fence palings what do you see? A well tended garden. A wild lawn. A glistening pool of water edged in blue tiles. Beyond our fence, a private party makes their way through a case of XXXX Gold. On the other side, the neighbour’s unwashed car sits atop a slab of sunbaked concrete. The faint sound of a sitar floats through on the wind from a few doors down. Through the back fence, only dust as far as the eye can see.

Good fences make good neighbours. You can tell a lot about a person by what their fence encloses, the privacy it protects. The beauty of a fence lies in its unassailable authority. Do what you want, just not in my Backyard. We claimed this patch of dirt with imaginary lines drawn with imported ink. We possessed this piece of Country by staking it out in timber posts.

The flames stopped right at our back fence. We are so lucky. This is our little piece of Paradise.

Other Things Visible on Paper
This lecture examines the ways in which the pedagogical milieu of the 1960s in the U.S., structured value in architecture by establishing distinctions between copyists and technicians on the one hand, and authors and conceptual designers on the other. Despite the apparent oppositions inferred by these pairings, these terms were bound up in a definition of technology that remained rooted in the mechanization of heavy industry. The focus obscured the growing number of unimposing yet specially designed items of everyday practice supplied to architects that were equally intrinsic to the rationalization of practice. These supplies—inks, pens, papers, films, erasers, lead cartridges, and tapes—were what I call “machines on the desk.” Despite the various ways in which manufacturers invested in ideas of diversification and innovation, precision, and systematization, these items were not widely understood as technological objects. It was precisely the fact that they did not appear to be technological, however, that enabled them, under the neutral guise of supplies, to operate as important yet invisible actors in the structuring of architectural authors in the studio—students who became authors exactly because of their ability to operate these 'machines'.

Biography
Sarah Hearne a curator and educator of architectural history and theory. Her curatorial work includes an exhibition and symposium on information management and display in contemporary architectural research, titled Fieldwork (2015) at the University of Technology Gallery in Sydney, where she was a History and Theory lecturer. She has also worked on curatorial projects including Everything Loose Will Land (MAK Center, 2013) and more recently as an Associate Curator on The Duck and the Document (Sci-Arc Gallery, 2017) and Architecture Itself and Other Myths of Postmodernism (Canadian Centre for Architecture, 2018).

Smout Allen will present their iconoclastic work, through “speculative architecture and architectural instruments that explore borders, tectonics, cartography and ecology to document and expose intersections between nature and the manmade”.

Biography
Mark Smout and Laura Allen jointly run the design research practice, Smout Allen, where they explore the intersections and interactions of landscape, architecture, art, and science.
They have been selected for both Venice Biennale (2012 and 2016) and Chicago Biennale (2015). In 2005, they won the Summer Exhibition Award for Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts. They have successfully carried out collaborations with international individuals and institutions such as the University of Southern California Libraries, Williams F1 Advanced Engineering, the Centre for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), Los Angeles, the British Council and the Land Art Archive, Nevada. Since 2010 they have regularly worked in collaboration with Geoff Manaugh, developing projects including L.A.T.B.D. for the Chicago Biennial and University of Southern California, and the “British Exploratory Land Archive”.
They are both Professors at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where they run MArch Unit 11 and are Co-Directors of the Landscape Architecture Programmes.

Hunter gatherer. How FIG Projects wander the land of architecture online.
FIG Projects, founded by Fabrizio Gallanti and Francisca Insulza in 2003, is a research studio, based in Montréal, that writes, studies, curates and designs. Since 2014, it scavenges the deep recesses of archives, popular culture depositories, personal blogs, memories, whether analog or digital, to then regurgitate predigested content to an expanding audience of "friends on Facebook". Architecture is the main field of interest, but curiosity brings us to many other places. The only rule of play, is to find the stuff we like and suggest others to try it too.

Fabrizio Gallanti is a curator and architect with experience in architectural design, education, publication and exhibitions. In the fall of 2020 he will start as director of arc en rêve in Bordeaux. He holds a PhD in architectural design from the Politecnico di Torino (2001) and has taught in Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. He was the first Senior Mellon Fellow at the Princeton University School of Architecture in 2014, and currently teaches at the School of Architecture of McGill University and Université de Montréal, and the Architectural Association, London. From 2011 to 2014, he was the associate director of programs at the CCA, Montréal. Gallanti served as the architecture editor at Abitare Magazine and as editor-in-chief of the Abitare website (2007-2011). Together with Francisca Insulza, Gallanti is the founding partner of the architectural research studio FIG Projects (2003-present), which curated the exhibition The World in Our Eyes (2016) for the 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale.

From isolation of polluted landscapes to safety protocols to survive in the wild, Quarantine strategies are not only linked to pandemics and diseases. Methods of containment are directly related to architecture both in form and policy and surround us more often than we might imagine. This lecture navigates through a spectrum of experiments and investigations, stories and policies, which aim to highlight how architecture is often more linked to constrain, than freedom, to conditioning, than empowerment.  From virus protection to interplanetary contamination, join me for a short quarantine, and adventures of the contained.

David A. Garcia is an architect, educator and researcher. He is a graduate from The Bartlett School of Architecture and has worked at Foster and Partners and at Henning Larsen Architects until 2011. David has taught architecture internationally since 2003, and is today Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Art Academy School of Architecture (KADK) and director of the Master program “Architecture and Extreme Environments” since 2014. He is founder of the practice MAP Architects, which focuses on merging arts and sciences in innovating for design in extreme environments with active building projects in the Arctic. The practice publishes the annual pamphlet “MAP”.  David lectures and travels world-wide, testing thoughts in academic landscapes and experimental structures in extreme territories.

OE House at 44 Low resolution Houses

Oe House by Fake Industries (Urtzi Grau and Cristina Goberna) at 44 Low-Resolution Houses

The OE House is a montage. The clients wanted a double house, so they could move from one half to the other, according to their state of mind. They did not like to spend their holidays traveling; they preferred to move downstairs, and do it for real, closing the quarters above. We provided them with two well-known domestic environments—the hedonistic open-frame of a beach house for the warm season, topped with existentialism brick domes for the windy moths.

Located on a rural town with an extreme climate changes, the OE hose is two houses in one: a summer house made of steel and polycarbonate on the ground floor and a wood and brick winter house on the first floor. Learning from anonymous neighbouring buildings we proposed a crossroad between a traditional Catalan rural home and a contemporary warehouse. We reclaimed the almost forgotten volta catalana and adapted industrialized components so that the house could be built in twelve months.

The Oe House was included in the Exhibition 44 Low-Resolution Houses at Princeton University curated by Michael Meredith
