‘Teatro Della Terra Alienata’ by Amaia Sánchez-Velasco, Jorge Valiente Oriol,Gonzalo Valiente en Miguel Rodríguez-Casellas (Grandeza + Bajeza namens The University of Technology Sydney), 2019.
The Great Barrier Reef emergency: a reappraisal of aesthetics.
This installation investigates the relationship between humans and coral reefs. The Great Barrier Reef on the Australian coast requires intensive care. A United Nations IPCC report (2018) states that human activity has caused the reef’s decline, and its recovery requires radical national and global political action. The reef is suffering from ocean warming and bleaching from seawater acidification. Using X-ray and monitoring technologies as a metaphoric device, Teatro Della Terra Alienata imagines the Great Barrier Reef as a state of exception in which the need for intervention may exceed all laws. This installation offers a fictional narration that poetically speaks of territorial secession. ‘Teatro Della Terra Alienata’ was the Australian pavilion at the XXII Triennale di Milano and won the prize for the best contribution to the exhibition Broken Nature, curated by Paola Antonelli (MoMA).
