The Amphitheatre Design & Build project aims to expose students to ‘live’ practice and involves them in the design, fabrication and construction of an architectural project at full scale. Developed as part of the Introduction to Construction and Structural Synthesis subject, which provides students with a creative framework for the active and critical thinking of the spatial, material and structural consequences of architectural design. Using the knowledge of structural design principles and construction systems gained throughout the semester, the Amphitheatre project allows students to apply their knowledge and to gain direct experience in the rigours involved with taking a design idea through to physical realisation.
The built project is the result of a combination of schemes that were submitted to an in-house design competition in which all 229 first year architecture students participated in. The project was collaboratively fabricated and constructed by the entire cohort over 9 days.
