The architectural design studio provides the creative framework for students to explore the motivations, techniques, contexts, constraints and opportunities that inform design inquiry. This, the first design studio for Landscape Architecture and Architecture students aims to expand students’ literal, visual and conceptual vocabularies. The ideas and methods developed in the studio are complemented and expanded upon through a series of lectures by internationally acclaimed architectural philosopher, theoretician and historian Andrew Benjamin.
Through each project brief, students learn to deploy various mediums, scales and strategies towards the elaboration of design proposals along with clear verbal and visual descriptions of the intentions, physical and cultural contexts, and processes that generated them. The subject delivers the framework to learn essential techniques for the production of space as well as important strategies in critical, synthetic and analytical thinking. Fundamental themes of drawing, scale, site, observation, abstraction, precision, translation and iteration are introduced through three assessment tasks: Assemblage, (Remote) Fieldwork and Generative Drawing.
