We are happy to announce an upcoming Master of Architecture block mode global design studio:

Quantifying Quality of Urban Space: A Generative Approach

The utility of quantitative data sets in the design of urban space is critical to achieving a strong understanding of the environmental and climatic conditions that the urban fabric is situated within, allowing for a contextual urban response that is finely tuned to the local conditions of the site. The data sets implemented in current generative design models of urban space are primarily quantifiable metrics associated with the environment at macro-scale (climate, population density, solar gain, rainfall, etc.); although they are critical to the design of an urban space that is robust to current and future conditions, the quantification of quality is sparsely implemented in current generative models. This is primarily due to the complexity of converting qualitative understandings of urban space (usually associated with feelings, emotions, social and cultural impacts) into numeric representations. The studio explores this Quantification of Quality through the integration of qualitative data sets in both analytic and generative computational models for the design of multiple suburbs throughout Sydney. Students will work in groups and redesign neighbourhoods in Abu Dhabi, capital city of the United Arab Emirates. As part of the studio, students will travel to Abu Dhabi and collaborate with students and academics from Abu Dhabi University. The studio will also be supported by practitioners from the urban design office SJB Sydney, who will provide industry driven insight on improving the quality of urban space.

Running 17th November to 19th December, 2025 - travel dates to Abu Dhabi 7th-20th(inclusive), pre-sessions (UTS campus + zoom) 22nd-26th September.

It is worth highlighting how Dave Pigram, Iain (Max) Maxwell, Jo Paterson Kinniburgh, and Shannon Foster explore how to align designing with County and designing for climate change using technology.

“This article explores the productive synergies between design for climate and design for Country, and the ways that computation can contribute meaningfully. Our context is a world experiencing multiple crises (climate, biodiversity loss, equity) and a discipline (architecture) that has historically reinvented itself by embracing the transformative potential demanded (and offered) by such challenges. This publication was produced to accompany the exhibition Fail Series: The Swimming Pool (1990) by Angelo Candalepas in The Space at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Guillermo Fernández-Abascal & Jack Cooper edited the publication. Winston Barnett and Urtzi Grau contributed to the polemic, and Nicole Ho & Samson Ossedryver designed the catalogue.
