Planning policy, household politics, and partitions; the studio Domestic Formalities will unpack the ideological, metaphysical and physical lines of domestic governance, question conventions and reprogram our cognitive perception of dwelling. From the Ancient Roman insulae to the contemporary apartment—delivered under the prescriptions of NSW State and Environmental Planning Policy 65 and the Apartment Design Guide—the studio will be a room by room interrogation that traces the lineage of compartmentalised spaces within the home. Through means, spectacular or subtle, we will rewrite the spatial semantics for the domestic apartment plan, and the policy that it abides by.
