Fire’s destructive and restorative qualities grant it a unique place in human history. Aware of this condition, the studio will examine in detail the 2019/2020 fire season in Australia, investigating the complex factors that lead to unprecedented devastation of the landscape, the uncanny challenge of social infrastructures and an invaluable loss of life. Whether ecological, environmental or sociopolitical, any territorial reconstruction of the events requires a series of design research inquiries within the context of the evolving climate change. The students will examine the role and potential impact of human interventions in the contemporary Australian landscape and its future management systems.
