Professor Deborah Barnstone
In 1923, Walter Gropius announced the new direction for the Bauhaus School with the famous phrase, “Art and Technology – a new Unity.” This vision was a response to the disasters of his period: the First World War, which was the first technological war and most destructive one in history up until that moment; the economic and physical devastation postwar; a massive housing shortage precipitated by under building in the 50 years before the war and mass migration in its aftermath; and dire material shortages. In many ways, we find ourselves at a similar crossroads in 2020; struggling with the effects of a global pandemic, climate change and numerous natural disasters, economic uncertainty, and more. And like 100 years ago, solutions to our challenges demand innovative design and the creative combination of art and technology. This studio aims to stimulate new visions for the built environment by asking the question: What can design do?
